What is the Right Beauty School Program for Me?

You are ready to join the beauty industry, but you just have way too many interests or no idea where to start! Feeling stuck in which direction to take? That’s okay! We know that finding the right education can be intimidating when deciding what you want to invest in and spend most of your life doing. So, we are here to guide you in the right direction specific to your talents and passions! At Queen Beauty Institute, we offer all sorts of great programs in cosmetology, nail technology, esthetics, and even hair braiding! Ready to dive in and find the right program? We got you!

COSMETOLOGY

If you are someone who likes to learn new things and try out a variety of options, rather than sticking with one specific subject, then cosmetology is a great way to go! Maybe you are one of those people who get bored easily. Well, cosmetology teaches more than just hair, nails, and skin. You can learn a lot about science and business as well.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN!

Cosmetology schools teach all sorts of fun things! Every school is different but has a general idea of what you need to learn to feel more confident. At Queen Beauty Institute’s Cosmetology Program, you can learn about:

  • Haircutting
  • Styling & Coloring
  • Makeup Application
  • Skin Care
  • Nail Technology
  • Chemical Services
  • Waxing
  • And more!

Not only can you learn how to apply different beauty techniques, but you are definitely expected to learn the science behind skin, hair, and nails. Some science courses you can take include:

  • Chemistry & Electricity – Important to know, as you are going to use a lot of electrical equipment like curlers and blow dryers. Electrochemistry is studying the relationship between electricity and chemical reactions.
  • Cosmetic Dermatology – Where you can learn about the skin and how to provide help for specific skin disorders and problem areas.
  • Histology – The study of plant and animal cell tissues through microscopic features. This is an important course to know, because understanding how certain parts of the body work can help you know the best treatments and techniques to perform on different clients.
  • Anatomy & Physiology – The study of the human body and how cells, organs, and tissues function. Knowing these things can help you feel more prepared when clients ask you questions relating to their skin, hair, or nails.
  • Trichology – As a hairstylist, trichology is definitely something you have to learn. This subject is all about the science of hair. You can feel more equipped when performing hair services as you learn about hair loss, scalp issues, and hair growth.

Now that you know what to expect on the science side of things, you are going to want to immerse yourself in the business direction. Cosmetologists generally have their own businesses and clientele, so you are definitely going to want to be knowledgeable in marketing, generating leads, and knowing how to run a business. Other courses that can come in handy in cosmetology school are:

  • Business Practices
  • State Law
  • Professional Attitude
  • Marketing/advertising

WHERE YOU CAN WORK

Like we had mentioned before, if you get bored easily, then there are different environments you can work in. A lot of cosmetologists work in salons or spas. Some own their own business or rent out from somebody else. This can be a great opportunity for freelance work or gigs, like movie sets or special events.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A COSMETOLOGIST

Now let’s say we convinced you to join the cosmetology path, then there are a few things you need to know to get you in the right direction. Every state is different and has different requirements, but since we are based in Pennsylvania, we can tell you what we know, which shouldn’t be much different than other states. There are three things you must complete to become a licensed cosmetologist:

  1. Get an education in cosmetology school.
  2. Complete your state’s minimum required training hours. In Pennsylvania, the minimum number of hours is 1,250.
  3. Sit for the state’s cosmetology board exam.

Depending on the cosmetology school and area you decide to attend, be sure to do research, so you know what to expect and are able to do all you can now to best prepare.

HAIR BRAIDING

Let’s say cosmetology isn’t really your cup of tea, but you absolutely love creating beautiful styles and feel like you could braid all day! We have a great program specifically focused on braiding hair. As a hair braider, you can create a variety of locks, twists, and natural updos. Queen Beauty Institute offers courses in:

  • Enhancing Natural Curls
  • Single Box Braids
  • Managing Textured Hair

  • And more!

NAIL TECHNOLOGY

You are someone who is detail-oriented, creative, and loves to paint nails! Nail technology programs can teach you all about manicures, pedicures, nail care, nail polish, and more. If you rather focus on mastering one specific skill set, then an education in nail technology could be right for you! Our course offers:

  • Nail Tips
  • Manicuring
  • Client Consultation
  • Pedicuring
  • Salon Selling
  • Salon Business
  • Nail Disorders
  • Acrylic Nails
  • And more!

NAIL TECHNICIAN WORK OPPORTUNITIES

There are a few different career opportunities for nail technicians. They not only have to work at a spa or salon. If you are looking to expand your work environment, some career opportunities to consider are:

  • Nail Consultant: If you rather work outside of the spa and salon world and more towards the editorial side of beauty, then educating others on nail care and products as a consultant for a magazine might be for you.
  • Destination Spas: Maybe you want to get out, explore, and travel? If so, working for a cruise ship or resort in another country could be a fun way to go!
  • Mobile Manicurist: Again, you enjoy getting out there, rather than staying in one spot. This could spark your interest in working as your own boss at special events, weddings, or parties.
  • Nail Technology Educator: A teaching career is a great direction for someone who is patient and loves to encourage others to succeed in their passions.

HOW TO BECOME A NAIL TECHNICIAN

If you are someone who is hoping to not spend too much time on their education, nail technician programs can take a lot less time to complete, than the other beauty programs offered. An approved program with a minimum of 200 hours is required in Pennsylvania by the State Board of Cosmetology. In beauty school, you can learn theory and practical knowledge to help you on your journey to success!

ESTHETICIAN

Do you have a passion for skincare, makeup, or lashes? An esthetician program is a great way to learn more about waxing techniques, facials, makeup application and everything to make one feel extra beautiful! At Queen Beauty Institute our courses include:

AN EDUCATION IN ESTHETICS

If these courses are appealing to you, then you might want to consider exploring more on what esthetician school could look like for you. Similar to the cosmetology program, you are going to learn similar topics regarding science and business. You can also learn about salon safety and sanitation practices.

The more you learn as an esthetician, the more likely you are able to add value to your future. We highly recommend keeping up with the trends now, and a great way to do this is by visiting social media and keeping up with different beauty school *student’s work!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME AN ESTHETICIAN
