Esthetics: What is It? Is it the Right Program for Me?
If you’re familiar with the world of beauty, then chances are you’ve come across the term esthetics before. Whether you’ve heard it or not, you still may not know what it means. Have you ever received a facial at a spa or gotten eyelash extensions? Both of those services (and countless others) are performed by estheticians! Estheticians go to school to study esthetics: the science and art of skincare.
Queen Beauty Institute (QBI) loves all things beauty, including esthetics and skincare! Our school offers an Esthetics Program that can turn students’ love of skincare into a future. If you have a passion for skincare and want to learn more about it, keep reading and we’ll give you an inside look!
What Do Estheticians Learn?
This depends on how far you choose to take your education. Some people enjoy performing the basics of skincare: facials, waxing, or applying makeup. Others prefer to get into the medical side of esthetics with lasers and other advanced tools. Lucky for you, the choice is yours!
Queen Beauty Institute’s esthetics curriculum includes:
- Professional Practices
- Skin Sciences
- Facial Treatments
- Temporary Hair Removal
- Makeup Application
- Lash Lift & Tint
- Brow Tint & Lamination
- And More!
These are some of the basic things you can learn when studying to become an esthetician!
How Long Does It Take to Become an Esthetician?
Programs vary between schools and states, but typically esthetician programs are shorter than cosmetology programs. In Pennsylvania, the requirement is 300 hours, while other states require closer to 1,000 hours to get a license. At Queen Beauty Institute, you can complete our 300-hour esthetics program in as little as 13 weeks!
The 300-hour requirement only accounts for the time it takes to complete a basic program. Depending on your path after your esthetics education, you may need more schooling. Medical estheticians need additional training, but the required hours vary between states and clinics.
Where Can Estheticians Work?
Since you learn plenty of things in skincare school, that can result in plenty of potential job opportunities after your training! The sky’s the limit as a skincare specialist. Estheticians can enjoy working in a fast-paced, competitive, and highly-specialized field within beauty.
Those who study at Queen Beauty Institute often enjoy the relaxing aspect of their field, practicing in more of a spa or salon setting. They can provide facials, wax unwanted hair, and provide generally any skin-related cosmetology services that could enhance not only their clients’ skin, but the way their clients feel about themselves.
Advanced estheticians who have more training have a wider range of options and might work as skin care specialists alongside dermatologists. They often treat people with skin disorders or work close to the medical field, alongside doctors, nurses, and specialists in clinics. This may require more schooling in medical areas and isn’t guaranteed to every esthetics school graduate, but could still be the route for you.
How Do I Become an Esthetician?
While the way to become an esthetician can differ slightly between states, there are some steps that remain the same wherever you live.
