10 Careers You Can Have in Cosmetology
The beauty industry is a popular choice because it can give you endless opportunities for your future. There are so many careers available that fit anyone’s passions and interests. If you’re ready to follow your dreams of beauty but are unsure of your options, keep reading to discover 10 possible careers in cosmetology. We cannot guarantee that every cosmetologist can become all of these things, but additional education and experience can help you get there!
What is Cosmetology?
When choosing a career in the beauty industry, it’s important to understand what cosmetology is. The beauty industry is vast and covers many different areas, so it can be confusing to know what exactly a cosmetologist does.
Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatments that range from simple hair care to more advanced beauty techniques. These treatments can include:
- Hairstyling
- Skincare
- Nail Technology
- Hair Coloring
- Makeup Application
- And more!
Cosmetologists know everything there is to know about beauty. With a cosmetology license, you can gain skills in any of these areas. At Queen Beauty Institute, we offer programs in cosmetology and other areas to help you reach your goals.
Now that you know what cosmetology is, let’s dive into your career options!
1. Hairstylist
One of the most common things associated with cosmetology is hairstyling, which is why it’s one of the more popular choices for those with cosmetology licenses. Hairstylists know the ins and outs of hair care and can learn the skills to create and maintain hairstyles for their clients. In addition to cutting, coloring, and styling hair, a stylist may educate their clients about hair and scalp care. This position is great for those passionate about hair care and love interacting with people on a daily basis.
2. Skin Care Specialist
If you’re passionate about skin care, becoming an esthetician may be the right path for you. Many cosmetologists pursue this career path and get an additional education in esthetics. A skin care specialist knows the right treatments and products for various clients.
Becoming a skin care specialist in Pennsylvania requires an esthetician license, not a cosmetology license. Additional classes outside or instead of a cosmetology program are required, as there are skills estheticians specialize in that cosmetologists do not. Queen Beauty Institute offers an esthetics program to all those who want to further their education in skincare.
3. Nail Technician
Becoming a nail technician is a great way to express your creativity. In addition to creating beautiful nail art, nail technicians help clients feel their best by shaping nails, grooming cuticles, removing calluses and providing synthetic nail treatments. Manicurists are artists who can create ornate nail art. Whether it’s painting funky patterns or delicate flowers, being a nail tech can be a great opportunity to flex your creative muscles.
At Queen Beauty Institute, our nail technology program can help you develop your personal style and enhance your future as a professional nail technician.
4. Makeup Artist
Some cosmetologists may choose to follow their dreams of makeup artistry. This involves using cosmetics to accentuate the appearance of the face and body. In this area, you’ll use tools like applicators, eyebrow shapers, sponges, and brushes to apply makeup, accentuate facial structure, or create stunning looks for various events. Makeup artists can work in a salon or freelance their services for special events like weddings or proms.
5. Beauty Writer/Editor
This position will require more education and experience besides that of beauty school, but can be attainable to anyone who puts their mind to it. As a beauty writer, you can use your skills and knowledge of the beauty industry to educate others through articles, blogs, or websites. A career like this is ideal for someone who has a passion for beauty and writing, and can communicate with others effectively.
6. Beauty Business Consultant
A beauty consultant works in the beauty retail industry by assisting customers in choosing the right beauty products to reach their desired look. They often give advice to customers on the best cosmetic and skincare products to use.
This position requires some years of experience in the beauty industry and a strong knowledge of different styles and products, so a base education in beauty school is important. A beauty business consultant isn’t guaranteed for every cosmetologist, but is something worth working towards.
7. Salon Manager
Like a beauty consultant, becoming a salon manager requires lots of experience in the beauty industry. In this position, it is also necessary to have an understanding of business management, as much of this job deals with administration, hiring processes, working with clients, and guiding other cosmetologists.
8. Massage Therapist
Some certified cosmetologists continue their education and become massage therapists. These beauty professionals use therapeutic and medicinal treatments to help clients with various problems. Massage therapists often specialize in one area such as athletic massage, deep tissue or Swedish massage.
9. Instructor
Licensed cosmetologists can study to become instructors, and teach other students the skills to become a successful beauty professional. As a beauty school instructor, you have a passion for beauty and for teaching. Being an instructor can often be one of the first steps in becoming a salon manager as well.
At Queen Beauty Institute, we offer a teacher program for licensed cosmetologists who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and skills with others.
10. Barber
Some cosmetologists prefer the more technical side of haircutting and choose to specialize in barbering. Barbers reflect a lot of what hairstylists do, but specialize mainly in men’s haircuts and styling. This can include beard trimming/shaving, specialized haircuts, and facials. Depending on your location, you may need an additional barbering license.
